About NTU Silat

Team History

Club Founder: Mr Muhammad Rizlan

‘No Retreat. No Surrender.’ No other motto aptly describes the strong will and commitment of our club. For the past 8 years, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Silat Club has stood firmly by these simple yet significant words of our pioneers. Founded by Muhammad Rizlan on 31st January 2002, its objective was to advocate Pencak Silat as a healthy and engaging sport to NTU and NIE students. Amidst difficult circumstances, Rizlan, along with his fellow student enthusiasts, set up a humble club; which has since matured and prospered progressively over the years.

Our achievements

Under the guidance of Coach Ilyas Hakim Jamaludin, as well as the dedication and discipline of our members, the club has had several achievements. Being an active supporter of Silat at the tertiary level, we have participated in the annual Invitational Silat Championship for 7 years running; accomplishing our greatest feat yet in 2008. Despite being one of the smaller teams, NTU Silat Club emerged first runner-up with 4 Golds, 1 Silver and 2 Bronzes. We have successfully hosted this championship previously in 2004 and 2009, and are looking forward to play host once again in the coming years.

Over the years, the team has garnered:

Academic year Placing Gold medals Silver medals Bronze medals
2007/08 2nd 4 1 2
2008/09 5th 1 2 3
2009/10 4th 3 0 4

The NTU spirit

Beyond silat training sessions, we seek to continuously foster team spirit and camaraderie. We have organized many activities such as Team Bonding and Training Camps and leisure get-togethers such as Hari Raya outings for our own members. Yet, we also dedicated time to impart skills to external associations such as the Charity Outreach with Darul Ma’wa in 2006. Our efforts to bridge closer institutions were also demonstrated through the NTU-NUS Friendlies held in May 2008 and the NTU-SMU Friendlies in January 2010.

Our club is also repeatedly invited to perform at our school events to showcase Silat to the public. To date, we have put up several performances at the annual NTU Recruitment Fair, NTU Heritage Walk, NTU Cultural Week and also a performance in front of guests from Malaysia in NIE. In fact, our most notable performances include one in the opening ceremony of the World Debating Championship 2003 in front of participants around the world, as well as distinguished Guest of Honour; our president Mr S.R. Nathan. Increased exposure through these kinds of performances has also allowed our club to gain an admirable reputation which we strive to maintain and uphold.

Despite being one of the smallest clubs at tertiary level, our club too stands proud on being a close and cohesive unit. This is validated by several of our past alumni members who still visit and join us for our regular trainings. Now that we are beginning a new academic year, we hope to recruit members to share and pass on the unique traditions and experiences of NTU Silat Club. As we continue to mature, may we bring the club to even greater heights.
