As suggested by the NTU Silat Club coach Mr Ilyas Hakim Jamaluddin, I’ve finally managed to steal some time to update about the not so recent Universiti Malaya: Pendekar Se’abad 4 competition which was held from 21-24 February 2008 ( sorry coach ). As being the only representative from Singapore, NTU Silat Club, represented by 10 athletes and headed by its coach, Mr Ilyas and Team Manager, Miss Herni, was not cowed by the intense pressure it faced and managed to bring glory to the school. Here is a reproduced of the email sent out by Mr Ilyas to summarise the achievement of NTU Silat Club in the land of the Twin Towers…

Rizman Hassan, 26, has always been interested in the traditional martial arts of silat since young. His interest turned into unbridled passion after he became an active member of ntusilat club and had since represented his university in many tertiary and national silat competitions during his undergraduate days.

So it was of no surprise when he mooted the idea of learning to perform the silat pengantin which is ubiquitously seen during the wedding ceremonies of Malay brides and bridegrooms. After discovering an article about silat pengantin in a local newspaper, he started to ask around among the ntusilat club members to gauge their interest in learning the art of silat pengantin too.

And so on a rainy night last Monday, 24 March 2008, ntusilat club organised its inaugural silat pengantin workshop for its members. A healthy turnout of 18 participants showed up in Activity Room 2 at around 7.30pm. The night turn into a reunion of sort with the appearance of ntusilat club alumni such as Darwis and Razali who took time off from their busy work to gain some knowledge about this artistic aspect of silat.

The main instructor for the day was Paman Iskandar Muda Abdul Jalil Rais from Singapore Pencak Silat Performing Arts. Accompanying him were his three silat students as his assistants for the night. The night was a mix of theory and practical lessons, starting with a brief self introduction by Paman Iskandar and the rules and regulations of silat pengatin. The compulsory six ‘rukun’s were drilled into the participants as without any of them, the silat pengantin is incomplete. The meaning of each movement of the nine ‘rukun’s was explained in detail as they mirror the actions of a guest visiting the home of his host. Paman Iskandar managed to grab the attention of the participants throughout the night with his good sense of humour and witty comments.

As the night came to a close, Paman Iskandar reminded all the participants to continue practising the nine ‘rukun’s and the flowery movements diligently so that in the future their actions will be smooth and elegant. For sure Rizman will do as advised.

It’s been a long time since I paid a visit here…

Time for some spring-cleaning…

Made a few changes:

1. Changed the face of the website (bored of the old look).
2. Opened up a yahoo account for ntusilat (ntusilat[at]yahoo[dot]com[dot]sg).
3. Opened up a flickr account (store ntusilat photos and can hotlink from there).
4. Transformed the look of the media player.
5. Replaced Raya song with Rock song.

NTU Silat Gila-Gila Jalan Raya ‘07 ~ NTU Silat Crazy Raya Outing ‘07

Well it was a totally crazy, wild, outrageous, hilarious and fun Raya outing.

Haven’t been laughing as much till my jaws ached.

And it was great to learn a few more stuff about the new members through the interactions and conversations and finally memorised their names; erm… in alphabetical order Adib, Andi, Anisah, Hayati, Herni, Liyana (sorry forgot to add you), Razee, Syaza, Sukiman.

Really cool and great people.

Really hope you guys and gals stay on with NTU Silat.

It was nice to get updates from the alumnis such as Kak Lin “Lil girl at the window”, Renee The Genius, Nasir “Bruce Lee”, Rizman “Circus Trainer” and The Godfather RizlanLuth. and his cutey baby son,

Last but not least the great friends that have been around.

To the committee, thanks for the great organisation. Without you, the outing would not have taken place.

So give yourselves a pat on the back.

Hello!

I’m the guy who long time never go training.

Not because I don’t want to go lah but because of some other things.

Because I long time never see my friends from NTU Silat Club, I think ok lah join them for this Breakfast Session or ‘Buka Puasa’ or Iftar (coming from the word ‘futhur’ which means breakfast in Arabic) or Sungkai (this is what people in Brunei call ‘buka puasa’).

At least can catch up little bit with them.

But today the plan a bit different one. I thought go breakfast first then pray Maghrib. But tonight we pray Maghrib first then breakfast. So some of us like Rizman, Rizar and I go break our fast at Kassim Mosque first. We also see Ridzwan and his new buddy there. His name is Razi (new guy). Everybody’s name all start R one except me.

Rizman is wearing the white stripe shirt (dunno why he every time must wear smart only). Rizar wearing the green one.

Rizar (in his head): “Aiyah! Eat bubur masjid (a type of porridge usually made by mosques and served during Ramadhan) only ah.”

Amik Kau! (Take that you!). Not only were we given porridge. They provided a whole big plate of white rice with many vegetables, sambal sotong (squid chilli) and ikan kering (dried fish) summore. Also got badung water (rose cordial mix with condensed milk) and fruits. The black and brown small things on the big plate is kurma (dates).

Then after Maghrib prayers we met Shedah and her sidekick Hajar at the bus-stop outside Kassim Mosque. Then Syahid and his new buddy Andy (new guy) came on their bikes. Aiyah when to Prac 2 sey.

As the others not yet come although we waited so long for them, we decided to go Kampung Chai Chee Restaurant first.

This the place.

We thought we had booked a place there, but apparently they don’t have any record of us making a booking. Luckily there were not many people there, so we were given two rows of tables. So ok lah.

As the minutes passed, our venerable, veteran, Kak Lin arrived with the pesilat Nationals, Farah, trailing a few minutes later. Then if I’m not wrong, the girl-who-rides (new girl, forgot her name) appeared. By this time we had start ordering our food while waiting for the remaining gang to show up.

So as the minute hands whizzed round and round countless times, two more (new girls, forgot their names) popped in. Then it’s Adip (new guy) turn to appear. But the grand finale for this Star Karat show belonged to Mr Jay (new guy). Wah! He appeared at like 8.30pm like that. One long hour since we first arrived at the restaurant. We even had Syahid pick him up summore sey. But I heard he got meeting lah before that, so okay lah eh.

The Gang

You see lah, the cameraman dunno how to take pictures; the behind people faces all kena block sey.  On behalf of him, I offer my apologies. Dun be angry ah the back people.

This goes out to all the teachers (kindergarten, primary, secondary, institute of higher learning and religious) and also the teachers-to-be out there!

Not forgetting the first teachers we’ve ever known; our father and mother.

Your deeds are not forgotten.

Thank you Raihan for the wishes. Yup, I am still receiving mail from this account. And yup, there’s a mini Rizlan now. His name is Luth.

My congratulations also to the new committee. May new heights be achieved with you guys at the helm. It is a new and exciting Silat world out there and we are right in the middle of it.

Also, to all teacher and teachers-to- be, I wish you a Happy Teachers Day. May you have a good and well deserved break.
